Writings from Gallifrey

so i figured ‘itunes gift certificate, i shall explore.’  so i gave the national another shot.  i very much enjoyed ‘alligator,’ so decided to get ‘boxer.’  the album’s great, and i’m just ignoring how much the lead singer sounds like ian curtis, and trying to listen to the album on it’s own merits.  the lead singer’s resemblance to the lead singer of joy division is becoming less significant because his lyrics are amazing.

so yeah, great album, but what blew me away?  ’fake empire.’  not because it was the lead single or the most known of their songs.  it’s because it’s damn near a prog-rock song.  the pianist is playing what is called ‘three over four.’  in essence, it means that his left hand is playing in 3/4 time signature, while is right hand is playing in 4/4 at the same time.  it’s not completely uncommon… i used it on a couple songs when i was in april park theory, as well as the bad habit.  but here’s the cool thing:  the drummer and the lead singer are playing in 3/4, while the rest of the band is playing the song in 4/4.  it’s an impressive feat, very successful, and the band’s continuing proclivity at their instruments (particularly the drummer) is lifting them nicely over other indie bands.
